Molti di voi sanno la mia passione per il Vintage, quelle cose che portano dentro di sè, non solo la bellezza dell'epoca, ma anche la storia o, solitamente le storie delle persone alle quali questi oggetti sono appartenuti.
Some of you know my passion for vintage, those things which carry inside not only the beauty of these times, but also the history and also the stories of the persons who used to own these objects.
Oggetti che, a stretto contatto, solitamente fisico ed emozionale, sono diventati importanti nel corso degli anni, accompangando il propietario in ogni momento, assumento un significato particolare, un valore che non ha nulla a che vedere con il reale valore commerciale.
Come si può non rimanere affascinati dal valore che porta dentro di sé un orologio d'epoca.
Quante emozioni legate a questo oggetto... appuntamenti, decisioni, viaggi...
These objects, which had a close contact with the owner "physical and emotional" became important through the years, being with the owner in each moment achieving a particular value which has nothing to do with the commercial value.
How can you not be fascinated of the value which carries inside a vintage watch.

Oggi è l'anniversario della morte di Alfred Saunders, avvenuta il 21 ottobre del 1927.
Alfred Saunders é un altra di quelle figure affascinanti che è riuscita a rimanere nella storia grazie al suo intuito e spirito imprenditoriale.
Today is the anniversary of Alfred Saunders death, he died the 21 october 1927.
Alfred Saunders is one of this fascinating persons who remain in history for his spirit as entrepreneur and for his intuition.
La storia di Saunders è fatta di tante situazioni che intersecandosi tra loro faranno nascere in seguito la grande gioielleria Saunders.
Chissà, se Alfred avesse soffocato il suo istinto per un lavoro sicuro che gli veniva presentato su di un piatto d’argento dal padre Charles, che era propietario di una cava di pietra arenaria... chissà, se Alfred non fosse stato uno di quegli uomini che vogliono realizzare i propri sogni rischiando, e a costo di seguire una strada più difficle, chissà... chissà se Alfred sarebbe stato ugualmente felice.
Grazie al suo temperamento e alla sua voglia di seguire la passione che lo animava Alfred, nonostante si fosse diplomato alla Sydney Grammar School e nonostante avesse già provato a lavorare nella ditta del padre, decise di seguire il suo istinto.
Così Alfred incominciò la sua storia di orologiaio, dopo sette anni di apprendistato, rilevò un piccolissimo laboratorio di orologeria, aperto nel 1878 da Josiah Wenborn, in via George Street a Sydney
Il sogno comincia piano piano a realizzarsi...
In origine il numero del negozio era il 781 ma, in seguito alla rinumerazione di George Street da parte delle autoritá diventó il 813, e teniamo ben presente questo numero, infatti Alfred si sviluppa rapidamente, grazie alle esigenze dell’epoca, al fatto che, la allora „giovane“ Australia aspirava ad un certo benessere britannico, e grazie alla grande passione di Alfred per l’orologeria.
Alfred cerca di ingrandirsi ... caso vuole che il negozio tessile adiacente si libera e lui, rilevandolo può ingrandire il suo laboratorio.
Una volta ingrandito Alfred incomincia a tenere anche argenteria e gioielli diventando così una orologeria e gioielleria a tutti gli effetti.
In the year 1878, Josiah Wenborn opened a small watchmaking business in George Street, Sydney. It was a very small shop, with a single window, in which all the watch repairing was done. Towards the of the year 1883, he decided to sell the business to Alfred Saunders, son of Charles Saunders, the owner of the pyrmont quarry. Alfred Saunders had been apprenticed to the watchmaking trade for 7 years, and on taking over the business, he himself did all the watch repairs in the window of his small shop. The shop was 781 George Street, but later the civic authorities renumbered it, and it became 813 George Street.
The little business grew rapidly, and Alfred Saunders looked for room to expand. A mercer and clothier’s shop next door became vacant, so he secured it, and had the two shops made into one. This done, a stock of jewellery and gifts was displayed, and so the business combined a jewellery and watchmaking store.
Il sogno prende sempre più forma...
Gli affari vanno bene e Alfred si rende conto che, per fare fronte alla ormai grande richiesta da parte dei clienti, si deve ancora ingrandire.
Acquista i due piccoli negozi accanto e così, creando un negozio più grande, getta le fondamenta per una attività che diventò in seguito davvero grande e storica.
L’intuizione di Alfred va oltre l’acquisto dei tre negozi adiacenti l’originale laboratorio e,
quando nel 1909 il „City Council“ riprende le propietà in George Street, sul lato opposto alla ferrovia, per creare una nuova strada (che oggi si chiama Quay Street) Alfred ha subito la visione che l’angolo che si andava a creare un giorno sarebbe diventao importante e il suo negozio era proprio accanto.
Lui fece in modo di assicurarsi l’angolo e li pianificò un grande negozio.
Trade prospered, and it soon became apparent that more space was urgently needed to carry a bigger stock of jewellery, and to allow fort he large increase in the watch repairs. There were two shops next door, and when these finally became vacant, they were immediatly secured, and four small shops were made into one large store. So the foundations were laid of what was to become a great business.
In 1909, the City Council resumed property in George Street, opposite the railway, in order to demolisch the shops, and cut a street trough to Pyrmont, This street is now known as Quay Street. Alfred Saunders saw in this the vision of an important corner, which would be pratically next door to his shop. He wanted that corner site, so he secured the land and a huge store planned fot it.

Il sogno si innalzava...
Alla fine del 1910 un magnificente negozio a tre piani si innalzava con una facciata di 65ft su George Street e una facciata di 127ft su Quay Street.
Questo palazzodiventò famoso e restò per molti anni la sede della Saunders, che divenne in seguito la più grande gioielleria dell’Australia.
Late in 1910, a magnificent store, 3-storey higt, with a frontage of 65ft. To George Street, and 127 ft. To Quay Street, was completed. That building became famous as the headquarters of Saunders, that became later the largest jewellery house in Australia.
